Description

Iceland's First Motorcycle

The first motorcycle was brought to Iceland in the summer of 1905, and Iceland Post issued this 50 kronur stamp to celebrate the centennial of that momentous event in 2005. An Icelandic engineer named Thorkell Clementz imported a Motosacoche cycle made in Switzerland under the brand name ELG in June 1905 and it was immediately popular.

Cartoonist and cachetmaker Dave Bennett has depicted a Puffin (mascot of his Puffin Cachets line of FDCs)
racing over a hilltop on his ELG in this handcolored cachet. The cover bears a single of the stamp (Scott #1056) and has two nice cancels of the Reykjavík pictorial cancel of October 7, 2005.

The cachet is handcolored and is marked on the reverse as cover #5 of only 10 made.
