Bennett Cachetoon
Shows George Bellows' Famous Painting
in a Different Light

As a young visitor to the Cleveland Museum of Art I was always in awe of the huge George Bellows painting 'Stag at Sharkey's' .

So imagine my shock when this original watercolor study for the painting came to light showing - not humans, as the final piece does - but two Stags boxing amid throngs of excited Sharks! This 32¢ stamp (Scott 3182h) from the very first Celebrate the Century Mini Sheet actually commemorates the emergence of the Ash Can School of gritty urban painting at the turn of the 20th century. The cover is first day cancelled on Feb. 5, 1998

Cartoonist and cachetmaker Dave Bennett included this strange Stag and Shark painting as part of his very first color photocopied cachet after 9 years of offset printing. The reverse of the cover includes a heartfelt homage to Bellows' powerful painting.
