The Game is Afoot

The small island of Alderney, just off the coast of Guernsey, one of the British Channel Islands, issued an attractive set of stamps recently to observe the 150th anniversary of the birth of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, creator of the great fictional detective Sherlock Holmes.

 Guernsey Post even created a new mystery tale to accompany the stamps -- they actually illustrate the tale of "Sherlock Holmes and the Curious Case of the Alderney Bull", with clues to solving the mystery included in the illustrations which feature scenes from around the island of Alderney.

Cartoonist and cachetmaker Dave Bennett has depicted his Puffin Cachets mascot doing a good impression of the master sleuth, following a suspicious trail of postage stamps!

The cover bears two nice strikes of the official Guernsey Post Office pictorial First Day of Issue cancel of October 29, 2009,  that features Holmes in motion. 

It is marked on the reverse with the Puffin Cachets logo and the inscription that this is cover #2 of only 10 produced.
